Roman Danube Limes in Syrmia
Along the right bank of the Danube between Vukovar and Ilok in eastern Croatia, large-scale magnetic surveys were carried out at 25 archaeological sites associated with the Roman Danube Limes. The work was conducted by cmp in cooperation with the Archeologická Agentúra, Bratislava (Slovakia). While the sites are primarily linked to Roman military infrastructure, surface finds and geophysical data point to a much longer and more complex history, including prehistoric and medieval occupation.
A key focus was the site of Sotin–Jaroši, known as the location of the Roman military camp Cornacum. Across several survey campaigns, a total area of around 125 hectares was investigated, revealing a dense concentration of structures from multiple periods. The results significantly deepen our understanding of the Roman frontier landscape in Syrmia and provide a strong basis for ongoing and future archaeological excavations.
