Magnetic prospection areas in Cordoba PP-O8

Emergency excavations carried out in the Avenida del Aeropuerto area of Córdoba in the 1990s revealed part of a large Caliphal-period necropolis dating to 929–1031, within the area known as Arrabales Occidentales Córdoba. An initial excavation of 64 m² uncovered 126 graves with 128 individuals, showing repeated reuse of the cemetery and characteristic Islamic burial practices.

Further rescue excavations since 2005 have documented a vast burial ground covering at least 103,000 m², with an estimated total extent of over 275,000 m² and around 5,000 graves identified so far. Nearby areas also contained a densely urbanised suburb with infrastructure and two possible mosques linked to the cemetery.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the necropolis extends further to the southeast, and ongoing magnetic surveys aim to define its full extent more precisely.

The recent magnetic prospection in the Plan Parcial O8 of Córdoba revealed that large parts of the site are strongly affected by modern deposits, limiting archaeological interpretation. Nevertheless, clear indications of buried structures were identified, especially in the eastern and western sectors, suggesting the presence of buildings and paved streets. In the central area, several pits may be linked to graves from a Caliphal-period necropolis.
