ERT profile: lithological interpretation

The Bisamberg, marking the Vienna Gate on the northern bank of the Danube, is an archaeologically significant hill landscape with settlement traces ranging from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods to the Bronze and Iron Ages. In later centuries, the area also played a strategic military role, particularly during the 1866 Austro-Prussian War and through both World Wars, leaving visible fortifications and earthworks in the terrain.

The pilot project Archaeology at Bisamberg combines historical research with modern geophysical methods to reassess this complex site. Magnetic prospection and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) are used to distinguish prehistoric settlement remains from later military structures and to document the preservation of subsurface features. These non-invasive surveys provide a systematic basis for understanding the long-term occupation and transformation of this key landscape at the border of Vienna and Lower Austria.
