Early Iron Age sites of Bistričak and Martijanec

location

method
Magnetics and GPR
time
2022 / 07

Geophysical surveys (magnetics and GPR) carried out in 2016, 2019, and 2022 in the Early Iron Age landscape of Jalžabet–Bistričak and Martijanec in Varaždin county provided important insights into ancient settlement patterns and burial landscapes. The magnetic data revealed possible ditches, pits, fireplaces, and flattened burial mounds, indicating a complex and extensive prehistoric occupation.

While results at Martijanec were partly affected by modern disturbance, clearer settlement features were identified at Jalžabet–Bistričak, including clusters linked to Bronze and Iron Age activity. The surveys highlight areas of high archaeological potential and support further targeted excavations and expanded prospection to better understand the scale and structure of the Iron Age landscape.
